the language of new media by lev manovich was a particularly interesting read. there are few things that i like more than debating the "new avant-garde" and new playing fields for the post-modern era. coming up with a list of ten key ideas, however, is not necessarily the route, while i understand it is the assignment, i would take for discussing the issues and making way for the debate of new space.
the ideals of post-modern era, basically everything after dada, are set upon principles of precedence. the context of arguments for, or against new boundaries, styles, movements (etc) rely heavily on what has come before it and how the artistic community has either rejected or accepted a particular issue.
so, the idea of fine art photography is pretty much the ground work of the idea of new media. using the camera and photographic image, as say, the new canvas. this stems from photo and social realism and the ideas of artists who capture image and context. lets look at film, for argument's sake, as the collective narrative of a series. and lets look at digital film as the equivalent to acrylic paint in the painting world. oil paint is to acrylic paint, as film is to digital. (page 8 synthetic computer generated imagery is not an inferior representation of our reality but a realist representation of a different reality if you are willing to accept film as the space for cinematic events to take place, then it would be fair to say that you can then accept cyberspace as the space for digital events to take place. cyberspace has the potential to be gallery space. the internet net as space.
(page 7 modernization is accompanied by a disruption of physical space and matter, a process that privileges interchangeable and mobile signs over original objects and relations)
the act of editing is now a form of process rather than aspect of process. this goes right along with the idea of montage as equivalent to collage, or ready made appropriation process. (page 3 editing or montage is the key 20th cen. technology for creating take realities) the impotence of copyright/original/authorship are pretty much negotiated in the accepting of the readymade. one can't really hold a double standard based on medium. (im not a copyright lawyer… )
this leads me to yet another key factor in the progression of acceptance of media in the fine art and more importantly an unavoidable faction of modernity : you can't stop progress.whether or not the art world has reached a consensus on validity of a medium or form, its going to happen, (hence the terms neoand post)
key themes
1. precedence
2. modernity
- progression
3. post-authorship
- haunting by greenberg and the original
4. editing as process
- montage
- film adaptation of ready made
5.computer as completion of film
- the appropriation of interface, like an other non traditional art space as artspace

whats interesting about "new media" is the idea of new. its an umbrella of category. as the genre progress, new sub categories will be established; but the idea of "new" implies latest contemporary technology.
